Víti Crater in the Krafla fracture zone, North Iceland. Hlíðarfjall (771m) in the backshot. Lake Mývatn is over the horizon to the left of the peak.

Víti was formed in 1724 by a massive eruption in the Krafla region. The crater is technically a maar or explosion crater and lies within the broader environment of the Krafla caldera. Krafla itself is behind and left of the camera.

While its name is loosely translated as 'hell', unsurprisingly Víti is renowned for the marvellous colour of its mineralised lake.

Extensive geothermal energy harvesting (steam) also takes place in this area with Krafla being considered among Iceland's most active volcanos with around 29 recorded events since the island was settled.

Fuji X-T1, XF 18-55/2.8-4 R LM OIS, 1/75th sec at f/10, ISO 200 ~30mm

Note that there are two craters known as Víti. The other is in the (also active) Askja caldera in the southern part of the island.

A very big 'Thank You' to everyone that views, faves and comments on my work! I really appreciate your visit :-)

Selfoss waterfall on the Jökulsá á Fjöllum river in North East Iceland. The river spreads out as it reaches the upstream side of the waterfall then flows around and over the sides of an elongated 'U'. Despite the amount of water going over it, the waterfall is nowhere near as high as Dettifoss just downstream and there is a faint, 'ghost walker', over on the left hand side cliffs for scale.

Selfoss marks the beginning of the Jökulsárgljúfur canyon, itself part of the Vatnajökull National Park, The river it contains rises around the Vatnajökull glacier, near the subglacial volcano of Bárdarbunga.

The day I took this photo - a dust storm was raging over the north east of the island and the camera was pointing straight into it from the cliff edge. I could actually see the camera shaking on the tripod and I've never bothered with the frame until Topaz Sharpen AI changed the equation.

From the window of the aircraft at 40,000ft - the fractal fringes of Australia's 'inland sea', Kati Thanda–Lake Eyre.

This area in the middle of the continent is vast - this frame shows vegetated dunes at the right and partially filled drainage channels leading up to the left. A main channel runs through the bottom of the frame along with the edges of the window. My best guess is that this is probably in the area of the Finke River catchment on the north-western edge of the lake.

The lake is heavily saline through evaporation and is approx. 15m below sea-level at its deepest point and subject to the whims of the climate. Sometimes it floods, sometimes it dries out completely.

The pale, misty patches in the frame are frozen water droplets trapped inside the window of the aircraft - seriously annoying for the photographer in the window seat.
