The Wheatsheaf stands at a crossroads on the A39 near Bath; the road going north leads to Saltford, whilst in the opposite direction is the hamlet of Stanton Prior. The empty car park adds to the impression of isolation, and clearly this photo was not taken during opening hours. As soon as I had my first proper bicycle I took off regularly along the "back lanes" , as we called them, from my home in Saltford. A gruelling drag up Longwood Lane (which runs parallel to a "long wood") would take me to a plateau, giving a choice of direction to Burnett, Corston, Marksbury or beyond. If Stanton Prior had been the destination I would have passed this spot. All these years later, and through the inevitable rose-tinted glasses, I'd swear that my circumnavigations of Stantonbury Hill were always under cloudless blue summer skies, the peace interrupted only by the occasional drone of a light aircraft passing overhead. I didn't record the exact date of this photo, but it was a Sunday in late July or early August 1980.

This was Keynsham library, built for Somerset County Council in 1965 to a design by John Hodges. The library was part of a larger development comprising council offices (housed in the taller block seen here), shops, a clock tower, and landscaping. An attempt was made to "refresh" the building by applying blue and cream cladding, but by this date (Sunday 14th May 2000) it is showing signs of wear: the original grey mosaic tile finish is visible through this hole near the corner. All reduced to piles of dust in 2013.
