A sight which has become very familiar to me since returning to the railway hobby (in a gentle way) about six years ago: a First Great Western Class 150 in the down platform at Yatton. Wednesday 23rd October 2013.

A Cross Country Voyager approaches Yatton station with the 16:53 Exeter St Davids - Manchester Piccadilly on Wednesday 28th September 2011. An unremarkable sight, given that these trains pass here at least once an hour in each direction, except for the services worked by HSTs. They don't half come through at speed, though. A recorded announcement reminds waiting passengers to stand behind the yellow line, now supplemented by new computer monitors warning that the next train doesn't stop. We can see a couple of interesting GWR artefacts here that enhance the station's character: the splendid rivetted canopy (was it brought here from somewhere else?) and the bench seat sporting its distinctive Art Deco logo. That logo still seems modern to me now, so I think it must have caused a sensation when first unveiled in the 1930s.

This is the last railway photo from the recent festive period that I'm planning to offer up. A First Great Western class 158 dmu leaves Yatton station, North Somerset, with the 17:13 departure for Taunton (the 16:00 from Cardiff). The idea had been to photograph 1E63, the 15:24 Plymouth - Leeds as it flashed through the station on the up road, not that we'd see much more than the white streak of its headlamp. As it happened, the late-running 158 was still in the platform when the Cross Country Trains HST put in its appearance: the nose of the class 43 only just coming into view as the shutter closed. Wednesday 2nd January 2013.
