A memory from two years ago.

This 'Pumpkin Patch' had been set up between the town hall, on the left, and the Joshua Hyde public library, out of shot on the right.

I don't know how it worked but I guess this was effectively a 'pumpkin shop'.

Sturbridge, Massachusetts on Wednesday 12th October 2022.

Here are the terminal building and contol tower of Washington Dulles International Airport, in the State of Virginia, USA. These structures were designed by the Finn Eero Saarinen and were built between 1958 and 1962. The terminal building consists of two parallel rows of elegant tapering concrete columns, leaning away from each other and suspending a graceful curved roof between them. This view can't really begin to do justice to it, but you should be able to see that the roof curves upwards from the nearer, air side elevation towards the higher rear elevation. The simplicity of the design meant that if needed, the terminal could be extended with relative ease, and that's what happened in the 1990s. The control tower is said to resemble a pagoda, suggesting that Japanese architecture also influenced Saarinen's thinking. Poor Saarinen didn't live to see the completion and opening of the airport; he died of a brain tumour in 1961 aged 51, but his designs have become some of America's most celebrated pieces of post-war architecture. Either side of the aircraft's tail fin, in front of the terminal, can be seen some of the so-called "mobile lounges". These are a distinctive feature of this airport; they convey passengers between the main terminal and concourse "islands" in the middle of the airfield where the aircraft park (from where this photo was taken). On the subject of lounges, waiting with me to fly back to the UK were two or three of the customer's own technical people, who had come over to work on the same project that I had. The difference was that they had first class tickets, but they did invite me into the airline's executive lounge as a guest which gave me an interesting insight into how the other half lives. Photograph taken Thursday 27th April 2000.

Arriving passengers make their way towards the concourse at Boston South Station on Monday 10th October 2022.

We had just travelled here from Logan International Airport by free bus and were waiting to board a train for Worcester, Massachusetts.
