My first visit to the West Harlem Piers Park - loved being able to get so close to the Hudson River. Beautiful views of the George Washington Bridge and the cruise ships in mid-town. There were a few people fishing off one of the piers, and a few others sitting on the benches but suprisingly empty and peaceful on this Monday afternoon. Across the street from Fairway where I found Harney and Sons Bangkok Tea - green tea flavored with coconut, lemongrass and ginger - so you know I had a great day.

West Harlem Piers Park officially open on May 30, 2009. The former site of a parking lot, the two-acre waterfront park now connects West Harlem to the Hudson River greenway and features new recreational piers, bicycle and pedestrian paths, and landscaped open space as well as access to the Hudson River. The Hudson River greenway is now continuous from Battery Park to Dyckman Street.

Local artist Nari Ward was commissioned through the Department of Cultural Affairs' Percent for Art Program. His series of sculptures, titled Voice, references the eyelet guide of a fishing rod and was inspired by the local residents who would frequently fish at this site. Mr. Ward also created Signage Barriers, a series of street–sign–inspired text. The text on the signs was drawn from surveys that Ward conducted with community members about their memories of the area, by the history of the native peoples that once lived here and the changing industrial and natural landscape of the Hudson River.
