From the plaque - "This Iron Cross was recovered intact from Ground Zero in lower Manhattan. It was present to the Church of the Good Shepherd by the Port Authority Police Department (PAPD), to stand as a memorial to those who lost their lives on September 11th, 2001." ..." A box of mementos was buried beneath the foundation of the Cross by the family members of those parishioners who died on September 11th, 2001" ..."The Cross inspired and became the centerpiece of the surrounding memorial garden. Pieces of its steel were placed beneath the statue of the Good Shepherd, the fountain, and each of the 23 memorial stones. It is the hope of all involved that this Cross will preserve the sacred memory of those lost, while providing strength to the Church and to the community".
