In the graveyard of St Michael the Archangel church in Kirkby Malham is The Watery Grave.
The 'Watery Grave' is from Victorian time and is unique as a small stream run between a channel in centre of the monument.
The story of the grave is that a Colonel John Harrison and his wife Helen were so often separated by water during his army career that she determined they would be separated by water in death. When Helen died the grave was built over a small stream that ran through the graveyard and she was buried on one side.
However, the story goes that when John Harrison died the gravedigger discovered impenetrable rock so the colonel had to be buried with his wife after all.

We met Paul on our trip to Malham. He was the outgoing manager of The Victoria Pub in Kirkby Malham where we were staying.
We got talking to Paul towards the end of the evening after he had finished working and we had just had a walk around the village.
Paul has worked in the licensing business for many years and had moved around a lot for his company, having the role of a "trouble shooter" in some of the poorer performing premises. He would be put in to bring the premises back on track then move on to the next place.
His transient lifestyle was supposed to be coming to an end and he was assigned to The Victoria in Kirkby Malham with his partner where it had been agreed they would be staying for about 5 years. However after about three months he woke up to a note from his partner who had packed and left him.
With the business being what it was , a pub, accommodation and meals it was too much for him on his own and he reluctantly had to re-think his plans. He was just in the process of handing the pub over to a couple who were friends with him and who had worked with previously, Pam and Richard. He was going to spend sometime in Brighton with friends before he got the next pub to manage.
A very interesting guy who had been through some drama with his family when he came out but carries it well and has obviously kept a level head on his shoulders. We wish him all the best for the future.
With having such a really good conversation with him, pubs and beer all the way through to gay rights and religion it only occurred to me to add him the project because I had my camera with us for the walk around the village (see Barry and Flash #2). when I explained about the project Paul was more than happy to have some shots done.
I wanted to get the beer and his tattoos in the shot and he was happy to pose for me. The first shots were taken with flash but the harsh shadows didn't do anything for the photo so I ramped up the ISO to get this shot which I am quite pleased with given the fact I had drunk a few beers myself.
