Earlier this year Mary's close friend Su lost her mum to cancer. Today, to raise money for Macmillan Cancer Support, Sue had all her hair shaved off and asked Mary to do it. As Mary had breast cancer 8 years ago and got through it, this is a subject close to our hearts.

The shaving was done in public in Sheffield Winter Garden with help from the Lord Mayor, Cllr Anne Murphy and a reasonable crowd of people.

The Right Worshipful the Lord Mayor of Sheffield, Councillor Anne Murphy is the 121st Lord Mayor of Sheffield.

At the opening of the Paris Exhibition in 1855, the Mayor of Sheffield was refused a seat near the throne with the other Mayors because he didn’t have a badge of office. As a result, money was raised by public subscription and the chain was bought for £325 in 1856.

The Lord Mayor of Sheffield’s Chain of Office symbolises the industrial character of the City and is made in 18-carat gold, weighing 1,555 grams. The ribbon, 27 chain links long, also holds the City’s motto.

I don't imagine when they raised the money it would be worn at events like this!
