To celebrate our 10th Wedding Anniversary we had a few days away in King's Lynn, for no other reason than we had never been there before, and it turned out to have a very serendipitous result. As many will know we like to have a beer now and again and we ventured into King's Lynn to do just that. In the first pub we went in it was quiet and we got talking to the manager, Ben, lovely guy. He gave us some tips on good beers places in the town, the first being The Ouse Booze. "Go down Ferry Lane", he said "there's a brown door with a bell, ring the bell ask for tracy and tell her Ben sent you. You'll be OK!"
So off we wandered, and quite by chance came across Ferry Lane, which was more like a ginnel, found the brown door and were given access to a lovely little club by the river's edge. Soon we got chatting to some locals and after a while it was like we had been living there years. Soon we were introduced to Adrian, who was in fact Father Adrian, of All Saints Church. This is in fact the oldest church in King's Lynn and dates back to Saxon times.
Interestingly the church still has its Anchorhold, a small room where the Anchorites lived. These were people who for religious reasons withdrew from secular society to lead an intensely prayer focused life. Once inside the room the door was sealed and the Anchorites never left, receiving communion and hearing mass through a small window.
So the beer flowed, stories passed about and Mary seizing her opportunity asked Father Adrian to bless our marriage and our wedding rings. He was more than happy to do this but disappointingly for Mary thought it would be much more meaningful to do it in his church, rather than in the beer club there and then. As he was holding mass at 10am the following morning he would be happy to bless our marriage and our wedding rings after the service.
So 10am, quite early for Mary, we found ourselves in Father Adrian's lovely old church for the mass following which our Marriage and our wedding rings were blessed, fulfilling a desire Mary has had since our wedding 10 years ago. Father Adrian was lovely enough to have some photos with us after this.
Originally Mary had asked about him taking her confession as well, but it has been a while and we only had two days in King's Lynn and Father Adrian had a service on the Sunday too. So she decided against that as we had to go out and celebrate.
