Taken before he was shipped out to Leyte Gulf where he was killed by Allied Forces. He is seated on the sofa's arm at left. Note all have their knives attached to their belt. My grandmother's writing on the back (next pic) shows this was taken in 1943.

His collar insignia shows he has a rank of corporal (伍長).

For what its worth - asked my dad to read it and he did without hesitation:
昭和十八年五月十日 May 10, 1943
左藤候補生支那 (Mr.) Sato Kouhousei China
派遣軍総司令部付 assigned (or transferred) to Expeditionary Force Headquarters
トナリ轉属スル二付記念 A commemorative
