It was an honor to watch a flight of four WWII era P-47 Thunderbolts execute the Missing Man Formation for the opening of the Chino Planes of Fame Air Show. Sorry about the dude blocking the view; there's always one rude one in the crowd but the Jugs pop out at the right moment.

In spite of trembling hands and unsure legs, these WWII vets (on the right) were honored to take part in the flag lowering ceremony at Orange Circle in Orange, CA. What a sight to behold. One was a WAC.

Two of the Greatest Generation live across the street from me. Jack Garrett, combat vet, USN, S1C - served on Bouganville, Guadacanal, Green Island, Rabaul to name a few of his stops. Mrs. Johnson's husband, who is ill, is a US Marine and was stationed on the Big E during the Battle of Midway.

On a somewhat selfish yet PROUD note... Today, Nov. 2, 2011, some of
my relatives will be awarded the Congressional Gold Medal in
Washington, DC due to their service to our country as part of the
442nd Regimental Combat Team or the secret Military Intelligence
Service during WWII. Since one uncle (Taro Tanji pictured) who would have
received the award passed away last year at the age of 83, my aunt
will be eligible to receive it. Another uncle by marriage (Michito
"Frank" Fukuzawa) will be there with his family. He was also awarded
the Bronze Star for valor as well as the Purple Heart for his action
during combat in Europe.

While my own dad missed the award cut-off by five weeks (Military
Intelligence Service), I am very proud of the Japanese-Americans of my
father's generation who fought for our country in spite of being at
the receiving end of searing hatred and distrust. It will be aired
online on the Pentagon TV Channel website.
