A short drive almost anywhere around Val Marie, Saskatchewan, will usually yield up some bird ops, and such was the case recently along Newton Lake Road, in the Frenchman River Valley. This Western Meadowlark posed nicely on a fence post with its beak full of insect larvae - possibly reluctant to return to its nest site while being watched. The soft light of late afternoon brought out surprisingly clear detail in the feathers. The car is a useful blind in situations such as this; many wildlife species don't react to it the way they do to the human profile.
