I'm about to hit the road for an extended time, Flickr friends, so forgive me if my uploads and comments dwindle over the next few weeks. Meanwhile, to put myself in a travel mood...

... here are some shots from Texas. It's one of my favourite states to photograph; so much variety. I'll probably stay in Canada this summer, but Texas will be high on my list next time I visit the USA. I made this shot in Monahans Sandhills State Park, in west Texas, nearly a decade ago. Morning light. I love S-curves and shoot them at every opportunity. Scanned from the original Kodak Ektachrome 100 SW slide. Despite the cute little automatically generated statement on the upper right of this page (above my map), this photo was NOT taken with a "Minolta DSE 5400" - that was the scanner I used. I shoot with Nikons, in this case the F100. A great camera.

I visited White Sands in 2002; fabulous shoot. I had one evening and one morning session - this was from the morning. It took a while to get out of "point and shoot" mode because the place was so surreal: the sand looked like snow when the sun's full glare was on it. Eventually I began to see line, pattern, and texture in the dune ripples. Amazing contrasts. What a place!

Scanned from the original Fujichrome Velvia slide. Don't use this image on websites, blogs, or other media without explicit permission ©2002 James R. Page - all rights reserved.

Pam labelled this one "The Dancer"; I would have called it "Cracked mud" or something equally unimaginative. Not that I didn't see the dancer, but sometimes I wonder if my own imagination is too fanciful. Also, my experience shooting stock photography tends to channel me toward literal titles: clients want to know what it IS, not what you IMAGINE it to be! Yet what purpose does art have, if not to unleash the spirit within? So, dancer it is.

It's a fractal world. A fractal is a geometric object that repeats its structure on ever smaller scales - for example, a snowflake. The coast of Vancouver Island is a fractal, too. Flying high above the land or walking a beach, you will find similar patterns.

Photographed at Muir Beach, west of Sooke on Vancouver Island, BC. Don't use this image on websites, blogs, or other media without explicit permission © 2015 James R. Page - all rights reserved.
