George was a childhood friend - pretty much family, as he grew up nearby and spent countless days with my brother and me in Bois-des-Filion, Quebec. Endless summers, baseball games, football, playing cards, hanging out, keeping out of trouble for the most part. I made this shot of him, aged 19, in my mother's kitchen, the year I left Quebec for good. George was bound for Texas, although he didn't know it at the time. The goatee was new; we were all looking for ways to signal our transitions into manhood.

Two winters ago it was cold enough for my neighbour to flood the rink, and I made some action shots of the three boys playing hockey. Great to see kids outside, being active, not slumped in front of a computer.

Here's another shot I made on assignment, illustrating another magazine article by my friend Judith. It ran as the lead photo for her story, published in August 2018 by The Western Producer magazine, a regional publication out of Saskatoon covering agricultural issues.
Jagmeet owns and operates a big rig to haul gravel for road construction (farmers have to get their grain to market, and road transportation has replaced the railroad in recent decades - hence the agriculture connection). He and other Sikh gravel haulers were based in Val Marie for a few weeks in the fall of 2018 while the local highway was resurfaced. When I approached him to ask for a photo, he was not only obliging but a natural in front of the camera, and I had the shots I needed within minutes.
Photographed in Val Marie, Saskatchewan (Canada). Don't use this image on websites, blogs, or other media without explicit permission © 2018 James R. Page - all rights reserved.

Sara is a young woman who lives on a local ranch here in southwestern Saskatchewan. Although she doesn't much like being photographed, she is patient with me, and I think I'm getting closer to capturing her beauty. I made this in open shade last month on an open back porch, while four of us were sitting around talking. Spontaneous and real: she really does look like that.

Daughter of close friends. I made this shot in natural light, mid-winter, just barely bright enough to do it with the film I was using that day. Katie was 14 months old at the time; today she is a young adult, living in the city, doing well. She grew up beside a creek, where it flows out of a forest and enters the ocean. Observant and patient, she was always the first one to spot the otter, the kingfisher.
For the Exif-minded, I shot this with a Nikon body, 50mm lens, probably at f2.8 and about 1/30 s. Scanned from the original Kodachrome 64 slide, January 1989.
