To photograph friends, we draw on our relationship with them. First advantage: they can't really say "no", can they... or at least, not for long. Usually, friends tolerate us. Sometimes they even co-operate. On this mild afternoon in mid-winter, I posed Richard against a painted mural on one side of the exterior of a grocery store on Galiano Island, British Columbia. "Now you're a flowerboy," I told him, and he beamed. Richard is an artist; he gets that I'm doing something, even if I don't spell it out. Besides, I have photographed his creative works and babysat his kids. That's what friends do.
