I made this shot in June 2006 in the Frenchman River Valley, Grasslands National Park, Saskatchewan, Canada. Dramatic evening light and a snaky curve in the road... the composition seemed to just fall together without a lot of effort from the photographer. I used a polarizer to intensify the colours a little, and a tripod allowed me to stop down for maximum depth of field.

Cattle branding is one of the necessities of ranching life. Here a herd of Black Angus have been rounded up from the open range in southern Saskatchewan and are being driven into a corral for sorting. All the new calves are going to be branded, inoculated, and castrated. This will create 400 steers, content to graze the rich grassland all summer and get fat; can't have 400 feisty young bulls out there.

As winter trudges on, I offer these reminders to myself: 2 - Flowers will bloom again. The plants are alive and well beneath the snow and cold, and will be putting out their blooms in a scant 4 months. Be patient. Find the beauty that is here now.
