Oh, it was wet! And there was no light! I got out of the car in dismay, not having any idea what I might do on such a dreary day. Walking the edge of Albert Head Lagoon, on Vancouver Island, muttering to myself. And then the seeing began, the process inevitable if I give it half a chance, and before I knew it I was down on all fours with a macro lens, peering at the miniature world and finding images everywhere...

No, not a black and white conversion; sometimes the world is naturally monochromatic. Regarding the square crop, I composed the original horizontally. I knew I had a nice foreground-background relationship here, although it was interesting to use a stationary object against the constantly changing waves. The resulting image, however, seemed too stretched out. Cropping the image square placed a little more emphasis on that offshore rock and balanced the photo's elements a little better.
