The one feature in common in all four photos uploaded today is that I'm at eye level with my subject (even in the landscape shot I have crouched low). For this shot I lay flat in the muck while a pair of juncos foraged close by. This is the female. The white behind her is a snowbank near Cameron Lake, Waterton Lakes National Park, Alberta.

A cow Moose feeds on aquatic vegetation in a wetland. Twenty-three years ago I photographed beavers at work, damming this very place, their life mission being to stop water from flowing. Now it's a good location to look for moose, deer, and many bird species.

An evening shot from the bank of Lost Horse Creek in Waterton Lakes National Park, Alberta. I used a tripod and an 8-stop neutral density filter here to allow a slow shutter to blur the water. Placement of the dark rock keyed the composition.

I have mixed feelings revisiting Waterton - which is my plan for the next few days on Flickr - following the devastating 2017 forest fire that reduced its forests to charcoal. I know this is a healthy process for the long term, but I don't have a long term window of opportunity left, and will never see Waterton again looking remotely like it did when I first hiked there in 1978. As of last summer, most of the trails were inaccessible, and the two main access roads into the mountains were closed to vehicular traffic. I might go and take a look this spring; not sure.
At any rate, here's a shot from June 2017, two months before the fire. Red argillite lining both sides of Red Rock Canyon. In years past, I hiked several thousand feet above this elevation, up to Avion Ridge, where ancient sea bed ripples in red argillite now sit more than 7,000 feet above sea level, and the views go on forever. I'll try to get a couple of those shots into the mix later this week.

Waterton has always been a good wildlife location for me. Tucked away in the southwest corner of Alberta, bounded on the south by Glacier NP in Montana, on the west by Akamina-Kishinena Provincial Park in BC, and to the east by significant and somewhat protected wetlands, Waterton is large enough to provide habitat for mountain and prairie species alike, and small enough to feel intimate.
