A young Dall ram on the lower slopes of Sheep Mountain in Kluane National Park, Yukon, March 1982. I made a lot of Dall sheep photos in the 1980s and have recently been going through the files, scanning some of these old Kodachromes...

The Slims is a vast, meandering, glacial river - outflow from the massive Kaskawulsh Glacier in Yukon's amazing Kluane National Park. Trails and hiking routes run along both sides, and these provide access to many extended backpacking trips into fabulous wilderness. It is prime wildlife country: Dall Sheep, Grizzly Bear, Gray Wolf, and much more. And that river can be tricky. Not deep, it nevertheless features lovely stretches of quicksand, in reality glacial silt. We quickly learned that hiking the shoreline was not a good idea. One day I hauled my partner out of a silty wallow she had stepped into, using a long stick I found. She was halfway to her knees and sinking, and we were laughing so hard we nearly peed our pants.
Scanned from the original Fujichrome Velvia slide, August 1999.

Dall rams on the Sheep-Bullion Plateau of Kluane National Park, Yukon, in September 1982. I was surprised at how close these animals allowed me to approach - how accepting they were, provided I sat still and didn't make sudden movements. I made a point of directing my attention elsewhere for much of this visit, even pretending to graze on the grasses. There are a lot of predators in the area, chiefly grizzly and wolf, and I wanted to make it clear that I was not one of them!
