Continuing to go through my wildlife images from my three months in the mountains and on the prairie. Here's another shot of the wolf that I encountered near Blue River, BC. It almost feels like cheating to admit that I shot this from my vehicle - but there was no way I could have gotten out without scaring it back into the forest. Still, an amazing moment for me, and I'm still finding good frames out of the 85 or so I was able to shoot...

I couldn't believe my luck when I noticed this wolf by the road side, near Blue River, British Columbia. When I pulled my car up and stopped, it didn't run away - instead it lay down to rest, watching me with a relaxed but attentive wolf gaze. For five full minutes. I was grateful, though, when it got up and melted back into that forest... we humans are generally bad news for this intelligent, social, and unfairly persecuted species.
Note: All of my wildlife images are Certified Wild. I generally don't shoot in zoos, and never on game farms. I don't consider the docile, placid, lifeless creatures found in zoos to be wildlife.

One final shot of the Gray Wolf from last summer, near Blue River, BC. I was simply amazed at its acceptance of me; it was certainly the most relaxed wolf I've ever met:-)

"The wolf exerts a powerful influence on the human imagination. It takes your stare and turns it back on you."
- Barry Lopez
Reprocessed, enlarged, and reposted for my newer Flickr-friends who missed it earlier:
How often do any of us see a wolf in the wild? They are among the most elusive critters out there. I've had a few close encounters - in BC, Yukon, Alaska, and central Saskatchewan - and every one of them is burned into memory, sharp and clear.
On this day, I had just left Wells Gray Provincial Park, and was driving north toward Hwy 16, the Yellowhead Highway, which would take me into the Rockies, when I noticed an animal near the road. A dog? No - a wolf! I pulled off the road and had five minutes with this magnificent creature at close range. It lay down and watched me from the edge of the forest, fixing me with that long, wolf stare, before casually getting up and melting back into the trees. Wow!
Most of my wolf encounters have been in the back country; this was only the second time I photographed one from my vehicle. And it was the most beautiful wolf I've ever seen.
I will leave you with this for the next few days while I'm away camping.

From the archive: an encounter with a wolf near Blue River, British Columbia. Unconcerned with me, it is at rest, scenting the breeze for information. By far the most beautiful wolf I have ever seen in the wild.
