Jan Johnson is a well-known metal sculptor living in Sooke, on Vancouver Island, British Columbia. His work examines themes of war, greed, exploitation, and much more - using "irony in steel" to examine new and old myths - and, it must be said, usually infused with the darkest of dark humour. Check out his web site at: www.almsculpture.com/

I made this shot in the doorway to his workshop. Scanned from the original Fujichrome Velvia slide and converted to black & white in CS4, February 2003.

Kevin instinctively knew what I wanted when I asked him to move closer to the clock; he dropped his smile and allowed me to try for something more symbolic than simple portraiture. I intentionally placed him a little closer to the camera than the clock face, to keep him in sharp focus and allow the clock to be slightly out. Thus the eye keeps returning to Kevin's face.

Scanned from the original Fujichrome Provia 100 slide and converted to black & white in CS4, light sepia wash added. Photographed near Danville, Quebec (Canada). Don't use this image on websites, blogs, or other media without explicit permission ©2003 James R. Page - all rights reserved.

A black and white conversion from a slide. Normally I'm not fond of these; my current bw work is digital, shot in RGB but intended to be processed as bw. This was different. I was shooting colour slides, and thinking in colour... but operating in the deep shade of a little canyon with blue sky above, the only colour that the emulsion recorded was blue. So the slide sat untouched for several years, until I noticed it and thought it had potential for a monochrome rendering.

Scanned from the original Fujichrome Velvia slide, November 2002.

When Sue and Paul visited me some years ago in my rented house in Val Marie - before I knew I would want to live here full time - I made some informal shots of them over coffee at my kitchen table. I was shooting Velvia at the time, ISO 50, and the room was not overly bright. As a result the slides were a stop or two underexposed. Today, thanks to the wonders of digital scanning, I am able to salvage a couple of the images. Velvia was too garish for skin tones at the best of times, so a monochrome conversion worked best. Window light...

Scanned from the original Fujichrome Velvia slide, August 2002.
