To be fair, the boot fence isn't a real fence anymore; it's just part of a fence that has been removed and placed on a hill top as a sort of iconic gateway to the Great Sand Hills. About a hundred cowboy boots have been nailed to it. If you have any old cowboy boots, you now know where to bring them.

I had never photographed this place in winter, and the truth is that aside from the boot fence, I wasn't overly thrilled with my results. It was very cold, though, with a cutting breeze. And just when the light started to look good, the sun dropped into a massive cloud bank. The cloud bank brought widespread snow to the area.

So... this may be the only shot I will show from the sand hills: having a little fun with the boot fence and low sun and rabbit tracks, seen through the Rokinon 8 mm fisheye lens. Photographed in the Great Sand Hills, south of Sceptre, Saskatchewan. Don't use this image on websites, blogs, or other media without explicit permission © 2017 James R. Page - all rights reserved.

I camped for several nights at Osage Hills State Park, near Pawhuska, Oklahoma. Warm days, cool nights, no other campers. Returning to my campsite after a hike, I noticed these trees and stopped to set up this shot in the last fading light of the sunset's afterglow.

Scanned from the original Fujichrome Velvia slide. Don't use this image on websites, blogs, or other media without explicit permission ©2003 James R. Page - all rights reserved.

Here is my friend Madonna - yes, that's her real name - on a little ledge, backlit by the sun. We spent a day hiking the remote and spectacular Killdeer Badlands in Grasslands Park.

Last of three "golden prairie" shots. The sun is just above the horizon and has turned the heavy overnight frost to gold as a little coyote makes his morning rounds.
