A colourful abstract view of the inside of a mussel shell found on the beach. Tripod, macro lens, small f-stop, cropped somewhat from the original. Sometimes, in the field, I see the potential... but not the finished image. Often that emerges during editing.

I'm sure it helps that I shot film for more than four decades prior to the explosion of digital photography during the first decade of this century. I did learn to compose precisely. Even so, it would have been nice to have had the versatility of digital back then, because sometimes I would nail the shot and sometimes I wouldn't.

On the other hand, film had qualities that digital cannot fully replicate. Sometime this year I may post a few small image sets as tributes to my favourite films of the olden days.

Meanwhile, back to the present: here is a spectacular iridescent curve of colour from a random shell, one of millions scattered along a rocky stretch of shoreline.

No sign of an occupant, but maybe it was curled up inside. Whether emptied or occupied, the Purple Olive Snail's shell is one of the prettiest on the northwest coast.

This Blue Top Shell is definitely occupied, wedged between mussels and anemones at low tide.

This was the first of two turtle rescues I managed last summer. Having swerved to avoid running over this one, I stopped and moved it off the road to the safety of a nearby pond. But first, a brief photo session! I used my oldest lens for this, a Nikon 24mm f/2.8 that I've had since 1981. Near Val Marie, Saskatchewan.
