Winter light, looking northeast at sunset. I am not so much interested in sunsets as in what sunset light does to a landscape. Those pink hills in the background! This is just off Highway 4, a little north of Val Marie, Saskatchewan.

Yesterday morning I hiked across a small stretch of upland prairie, came to the edge of a coulee, and surprised about 30 Mule Deer. They didn't wait for introductions; I am the dreaded two-legged thing that can only mean trouble. As they ran, I picked up two bucks galloping in tandem... Grasslands National Park, Saskatchewan.

Looking at this one again, I began to feel less than comfortable with the empty space at the left (see previous image). Cropped it square from the original horizontal, and I like it better. Right now. Who knows about tomorrow... sometimes these things need time to settle.

Not often in winter do we get a perfect, clear day when it isn't too cold. I took the opportunity to hike The Tabletop, a long, flat-topped ridge north of 70 Mile Butte. The butte occupies the middle ground here, with Aspen Coulee on its lower slopes. Grasslands National Park, Saskatchewan.

The coyote in the previous shot was a bonus. I really went up into the hills to watch the snow turn pink at sunset. Grasslands National Park, Saskatchewan.
