Today we had our first morning of prairie hoarfrost, and I jumped at the opportunity. Nothing processed yet, so for now I offer a shot from two years ago... when the crabapples were ripe and the robins ecstatic.

In full breeding plumage, a Horned Grebe swims by at close range. I was sitting at the edge of a lake, one of my regular stops when travelling through south-central Alberta. The day was cold, and there was still ice on the lake; migratory birds were arriving daily. I love the variety of birds I usually find at this location. Early May is too early for most species, though; on this visit, close shots were limited to Horned and Eared Grebes. The light, the water, and the grebes were all extremely beautiful.

I followed this Red-naped Sapsucker around a campground until it finally agreed to pose for me. A three second photo op, then it was gone!

A brown Black Bear, working a valley bottom, where the food is, early in the season - mid-June in the Canadian Rockies. This one has been feeding on dandelions; some seeds are plastered by the morning dew to its head and face.
