I sat on the shore. Waited. Several dozen Eared Grebes floated, dived, and did other grebe things too far away to photograph, but one can always hope some will venture in closer. And that's exactly what happened. They look splendid right now, in full breeding plumage.

I sat on the shore of Lonetree Lake, watching the grebes watching me. Gradually they became used to my presence, and moved in closer. Finally, several were within shooting range, and while I tracked them, hoping one would do something interesting... one finally did something interesting - snatched an insect from the water surface. Thanks to Rob for sharing this location with me!

I just found this in the files. Did a bit of upscaling, not much; the original was pretty busy. An Eared Grebe standing over what appears to be a floating nest-in-the-making. That looks like a threatening posture, or at least a defensive one; taking the hint, I got outta there and left her (or him, as nest building is shared) to the necessary task. Shot from the rolling red Toyota blind.
