I had barely enough room to walk around to the front of this rocky outcrop on Long Beach, in Pacific Rim National Park, Vancouver Island, BC, and make a few quick shots before the incoming tide forced me to retreat. An overcast morning with sea fog saturated the colours. For this shot I used a 24mm lens and polarizing filter; camera was on a tripod. Very special place.
Scanned from the original Kodachrome 64 slide, April 1985.

Last day at Pacific Rim National Park, shooting in the rain, everything wet and slippery, lush and green. This is winter on Canada's west coast. Some sections of the boardwalk were new; others old & funky. It allowed a slightly different take on the environment; this series doesn't try to hide the fact that we're in a park - a mediated environment. Exposures were long, and the biggest problem was keeping raindrops off the lens. I shot everything here with the Sigma 10-20mm and polarizing filter.

Ochre and Purple Sea Stars (both Pisaster ochraceus, just different pigmentation) cling to a rock face at low tide on Canada's west coast. I made this shot just before the wasting syndrome that decimated sea stars all along the coast; thankfully, there are signs that they're making a recovery. I hope to receive a report soon from friends who are camping there - just up the hill from where this photo was taken - this week.
I don't know why I decided to place the sea stars off-centre in this frame; I think it just felt right. The pano crop was an afterthought. Tripod, late afternoon light, Pacific Ocean to my back at low tide but my head was on a swivel. That tide comes in pretty fast when it turns.

As the sun disappeared into a heavy cloud bank, I climbed the rocky headlands at the north end of Long Beach for some wide views of the breakers rolling in. By this time the tide was in and most of the dramatic action had subsided.

On a trip to Vancouver Island during fall migration, I had lots of fun with peeps. This Least Sandpiper was strutting its stuff on the rocky shore north of Ucluelet,
