Between 1888 and 1890 Cunningham staked a 160 acre homestead claim. In 1897 he bought an additonal 140 acres under Desert Land Act and in 1918 an additional 240 acres from neighbor. These acres were needed for grazing and raising hay for 6 months winter feeding. Jackson Hole suffered drought in 1918 and 1919, and with ruined crops and falling cattle prices in 1928 Cunningham sold out to John D. Rockefeller, Jr.s Snake River Land Company. These acres were later included in the 32,000 acres donated to federal government and eventually became part of Grand Teton National Park.
