About 10 minutes after sunset with a bit of light in the sky, the crescent (and overexposed) moon came out and I saw this! No HDR.

The story:
---------
Soon after I made the photo "Passageway", my first flickr upload, the moon came out and with the last remaining light in the sky I saw this scene. Most of the light is from the intentionally overexposed moon. It is a thin crescent but it looks full because I exposed the scene for the light on the water, not for the moon! 2 minutes also allowed the moon to move a bit, making it appear even larger!

Keen water shoes
Fog never fails to create lots of atmosphere and mood. The Golden Gate is both a passageway for people as well as for lots of ocean fog to cool off the inland areas. A long exposure shows the way the fog flowed through the gate. The last light of the sun and the lights of the bridge in equal amounts illuminated the fog. This even light lasts for only a few minutes, so in the course of one evening, only one or two chances for a long exposure such as this are possible.
Since there is no time to take light readings, a good guess for the camera settings based on experience is the best way to go or you will miss the shot. Even though it was getting dark, the sky was still much brighter than the sea, so I used an ND grad filter to even out that contrast. It worked just the same as during the day.
It took me three years to capture this moment and I have never seen it happen again. Nobody was down here. There were dozens of tripods set up on the well-worn hillside to the right of the frame, but they were pointing in the wrong direction to see this reflected light on the water and how it moved through the fog and clouds.

Pigeon Point is home to large numbers of pelicans year round. It really should be called Pelican Point. As the sun set, the sky began to glow, but that alone is not enough to make a good photograph. I noticed that the water had become calm and the light enhanced the color of the water.
I decided to use a long exposure to define and accentuate the rocks in the foreground. This reduced the distracting motion of the waves while the glow was retained. There are other times, however, when showing the motion of the water is the better choice. Experimentation is often necessary to determine the best way to go.

The light at sunrise was spectacular following an unusual storm. I arranged the posts in the frame to make a diagonal line pointing towards the city. The extra long exposure softened the clouds and water to enhance the impression of how it felt to be there on this morning.
Without the two stacked filters, the exposure time would have been about 1 second and that would have made the water look rather messy. Also, I still had to use a ND grad filter to darken the sky in relation to the water just as I would have, had I not used the two stacked filters.
