On September 10th, 2017 Hurricane Irma slammed into the Florida Keys with the eye of the category 4 storm coming across the lower Keys over Cudjoe and Big Pine Key. We went down there this week to survey the damage to our island paradise. Almost two months later, there are still piles of storm debris lining the roadways. This shocking Islamorada image above is about 75 miles NE of the hardest hit areas. Many of our favorite spots are gone, now just a memory, and the thick, dense tropical vegetation is very sparse. It will be many years before it grows back resembling the island paradise we once knew... 10/30/17

[Update: This sad situation was on the local news last night 11/10/17. Now, exactly two months later the lawyers for each party are deciding who was at fault (if any), to have this boat removed from the doctor's private property. The doctor is claiming (tie-up) negligence and the boat-owner is claiming natural damage by an act of god. The boat was blown ashore and caused thousands of dollars to the property and natural seawall. The legally moored boat (and home to the boat-owner) was secured and abandoned with the approaching hurricane, and he evacuated the area to Tennessee. We'll see what happens, who's to blame, and who pays for its removal and the obligation for funding the damage. Meanwhile, the boat-owner is homeless, jobless, and has returned to his family in Tennessee. The doctor is letting the lawyers decide the next coarse of action. In the meantime the damaged 40 foot vessel Mariah sits where it is....]

With a storm-surge of 10 feet (water rising above sea-level), older hotels and homes experienced sea-water in their first-floor dwellings up to the ceiling, a sea-rise that they hadn't seen in decades! Many of the newly constructed local homes, hotels and buildings built within the last 20 years are constructed on tall stilts raising their properties above harm's way, but the majority of the older structures are not. Once salt water enters and turns it into a fishbowl everything is lost...
