So apparently last night, or early this morning, police broke down the doors to the apartment above my company's office. They had a warrant for one of the tenants (or both) on drug charges. This is the door out front that opens to their front stairway.

Around noon on Jan. 17th, a train hit a car at an intersection in Lemont, IL. It looks like the train dragged the car about a quarter mile before stopping. I didn't get in very close.
This is about a block away from where I work.
EDIT: Full story here, with VIDEO: abclocal.go.com/wls/video?id=7225581
As it turns out, a nun was driving the car, and got into an accident on the road that runs parallel to the tracks. Her car got stuck on the rails - it was not at the nearby intersection like I thought. Local people who saw the car crash were able to get her out of the car before the train hit. No one was injured.
Another man captured the train hit on his cellphone - the video I linked to has that.

I have no idea what this was about. We were working in our office when I started hearing the sounds of lots of people - some shouting, kids screaming, etc. I stepped out, expecting - I don't know, maybe a big building on fire or something. Instead, there is this 'umbrella parade'. Maybe 200-300 people all parading around the street corner at the end of my street and down to that tan building. (I should mention that there are train tracks in the middle of all that). Half or more were holding umbrellas, mostly light-blue ones. It was about 55 degrees and sunny.
It appears to be some sort of protest - the building just behind that clock is a local state senator's office. However, due to the utter incoherence and lack of any placards or chanting, their motive remains unclear.
