We drove along the California coast on the iconic Highway 1 and stopped at the Bixby Bridge. A cloudy day makes for a more dramatic scene, what do you think?

I processed a balanced and a paintery HDR photo from three RAW exposures each, merged them, made the shadows a touch warmer, and the highlights a bit colder, then carefully and selectively pulled the curves. I also sharpened the image a bit, it is not totally sharp due to camera shake.

We went for dinner after going to a small art exhibition in Vallejo, California, located in the San Francisco Bay Area. My friend Jerry Downs and I snuck out of the restaurant after ordering the food to take photos at the blue hour. He showed me the colorful graffiti below the Mare Island Causeway. This is the Mare Island Causeway with drawbridge that leads to the historical Mare Island Naval Shipyard.

I processed a balanced and a relaistic HDR photo from three RAW exposures, blended them selectively, carefully adjusted the color balance and curves, and desaturated the image. I welcome and appreciate constructive comments.

In summer we drove up north on the iconic Highway 1 along the Pacific Coast in Northern California. On the way we stopped at the shipwreck in Point Reyes near Inverness. The light was not the best - midday with no clouds; with HDR processing I could correct the harsh light to some degree.

After going to a house warming party in Redwood City I went for a sunset shoot at Westpoint Harbor, a yacht harbor in the San Francisco Bay. I waited until the blue hour casted some nice pastel colors on the water.

We went hiking near Half Moon Bay on the California coast. The weather was clear during the hike. I thought it will be too clear for a sunset shoot, e.g. too boring. The weather can change quickly. By the time we were at the Martin's Beach the sun was hidden behind clouds, stormy weather clouds. Martin's Beach has some nice rocks standing in the sea.

The Martin's Beach was long closed to the public because it was claimed as private land by a rich VC. For now it is open to the public, local authorities and the Coastal Commission demanded that the owner allow public access through his 89-acre beachfront. But he is now taking this to US Supreme Court, asking the highest court to declare the California Coastal Act unconstitutional! It would erode efforts to provide that kind of coastal access across the nation. More on that at lat.ms/2pK6JC7

Most European countries have freedom to roam laws, meaning that in general you can hike through private property as long as you do not damage it. When I came to the USA I was surprised by all the fences and "no trespassing" signs.
