Millenium Bridge (Foster) from Southbank to St Paul's and London City..........
From in front of the Tate Modern alongside the Thames, the Millenium footbridge leads across to St Paul's. Wren's masterpiece underwent major cleaning in preparation for the 300 years commemoration (2008).
The Millenium Bridge had to be minimal visual obstruction looking up or down the river, and have no height to compete with historic buildings behind. Hence Foster's rubber-band solution -- a sort of squashed suspension structure. There's a full constance of pedestrians crossing it. Undisturbed by vehicles and city noises, it opens up the new South Bank development, spanning with minimum apparent means --- a thin blade with cables, but firmer sculptured supports.
The bridge alignment is such that a clear view of St Paul's south facade is presented from across the river, framed by the bridge structure, thus providing a special view of the cathedral.
