Enjoy fascinating hilltop villages with their labyrinthic yet unified shapes -- organically built communities in rugged setting. Towns and villages of Italy evolved in close response to landform , with a humane sense of development. We can explore the visual delight of places steeped in history, with hidden discoveries of settlements living in a lost past. Always we find a deep sense of humanity.
In the delightful north-Pescia valley, Tuscany, a dozen or so villages sit on their spurs or peaks above chestnut forest. As our loop road heads up this dell, these places play a game of dancing landmarks slowly changing their spatial relativities. Superb. Each is intact and individual yet bearing expressive relationships to others near it and to the natural environment.
My sketch shows Sorana on its own small spur.
