Biot: Squatted on its hill, situated only 4km from the Riviera coast, the village of Biot scorns time. The area has known prehistoric people.

In 1209 a castle that belonged to the Count of Provence was given to the Knights Templar, and for most of the 13thC these Crusaders made Biot their Regional Commandery.

Now a Registered site, Biot enjoys a pleasant microclimate sitting on its knob hill back from the humid coast. A pair of rectangular towers stand at the top accenting the huddle of houses around them. Overlooking a valley in which locals tend their glasshouses, Biot today is a lively village with an arcaded square.

Arched-over alley streets lead intriguingly off Place des Arcades (above) -- narrow stone passages, fun to explore.

Tourrettes-sur-Loup clusters tightly along the cliff edge of the Loup gorge, directly responding to its groundform. Marvellous. The theatrical shape results from its exploitation of the sinuous and sheer cliff above the river.

Inwardly this village wraps in a horseshoe layout around a largish central square, Place de la Liberation. Four-storey stone housing edges this rectangular space set out originally by the Romans as their forum.

Tourrettes vaunts three dominant towers, popularly the source of it name. The castle-chateau, on Place Maximum Escalier, gives the silhouette highpoint. Remains of the walls of a 13thC donjon still show in its courtyard, but today the restored chateau serves as the Town Hall. A tumble of housing surrounds it, presenting many 16thC to 18thC architectural elements.
