Kahikatea, Puriri, and epiphytes, on local flickr visit to Smith's Bush, Auckland, New Zealand.
The straight tall trees are the Kahikatea/White pine or Podocarpus dacrydioides. Tallest of our wonderful natives, mature specimens grow as high as 60m. It's often the dominant tree, in an associative system, in swampy areas. Left alone Kahikatea groves regenerate.
The Puriri (Vitex lucens) has an entirely different character. It often bears pink/purple flowers and fruit (drupes) at the same time, as on the occasion of this visit.
Strange about Smith's bush is that it doesn't have a Maori name, and there are no Kauri or Pohutukawa trees.
