Heke St, Freeman's Bay, Auckland.
Think this was Dave Mitchell when the light edge of curved iron became modern fashion.
Note the extended timber sticks to form transition to the outside.

Marsh Cook's own house 49 Franklin Rd. Completed 2008.

Surrounded by traditional New Zealand wooden houses of Freemans Bay, this is a small inner-city (Victorian) lot. In designing for himself Marsh faced tight town-planning conservation and concerned upper-neighbour constraints but was determined not to weakly just imitate the changing surround style. However, he generally responded to the scale. The challenge was to provide for open indoor-outdoor spacious family living within the limiting envelope. This he achieved well as the next interior photo shows.........

Marsh Cook's house. (Marsh in blue jersey :-)
Opened-up interior despite constrained site. Opening wall on left.
Native rimu timbering, travertine floor.
Tour visitors enjoying the openness and light.
(Photo from stair to upper children-bedrooms.)

The house is centred on this main living room and courtyard with sleeping and service areas in the two-storied wings to the roadside and rear of the lot. Planned for long term flexibility, the terracotta tile-clad roadside wing is fitted with moveable walls as room dividers that allow for future use as office. The rear wing and central courtyard can be separated from the front areas, and work as a semi-independent unit........

Marsh Cook's house from Franklin Rd.
This house illustrates that with skilled design it is possible to meet tight planning constraints to still produce light, flexible, and human space inside.

Tightly planned townhouses by Claude Megson. 57 Wood St. Freeman's Bay.
Completed 1973. -- Cocker.
This cluster of urban townhouses in horseshoe layout took three to four years to complete. Playing on forms of nearby villas and hinting at European hilltowns, this building is a composition of sharp architectural shapes in white-painted weatherboards and slate roofs, combined with intricate timber balconies. Living spaces of each unit open onto a private courtyard garden. Bedrooms are located on a floor above, and the roof-level lookout turrets --- accessed through laddered trapdoors --- house tiny belvedere study-attics with widespread vistas over Ponsonby, the harbour, and city of Auckland......
