There is much swampland on the south-west side of Lake Titicaca. Water-fowl are common. However, it was the wrong season for us the see the wonderful swirling clouds of rising pink (James's) flamingos common above the altiplano salt-flats at appropriate times, some of which locate near Juli. I had seen them in another area in 1967.
Changing climate and human use seem to be resulting in degradation and lowering of level of Titicaca.

Islas Uros:
There are more than 40 floating islands made by layering totora reed on top of root clods. New reeds are laid regularly as those below decay. We saw how the islands are anchored down to keep location.
These islands have become a tourist attraction for Peru, drawing excursions from the lakeside city of Puno. Their original purpose was defensive, and they could be moved if a threat arose. Some of the islands still show watchtowers partly constructed of reeds.
The reeds are also used to build boats as we experienced. Remember the Heyerdahl experiments.

We're up to 4,000m, 33k from Puno, to see the circular stone towers used as built memorial graves for the nobles of the Sillustani. This is a pre-Incan burial site where the tombs are built above ground in tower-like structures called chullpas. They were constructed by the Aymara-speaking Colla people who were conquered by the Inca in the 15th century. The best are fine pre-Inca stonework. The engineering involved in their construction is as complex as anything the Incas built. The tallest is the "lizard" chullpa. Two are unfinished: one with ramp remnants to raise blocks, the other with cut stones ready to go onto an ambitious corbelled dome. There's a quarry near the towers.
