James Chapman-Taylor (1878 - 1958), architect, is recorded to have written "Permanance, serenity, quiet cheerfulness, unassuming good taste, honesty of purpose. I believe these are qualities that should be embodied in the design and structure of all good houses."
He built many homes in Wellington, Hawkes Bay, and Auckland which faithfully pursued the English Arts and Crafts tradition. He regarded himself as both architect and craftsman.
Chapman-Taylor frequently built in concrete, finishing the outside walls with trowel-stroked rough-cast plaster, iron window and door latches purpose-designed, and interior timbers adzed and dark stained. All these characteristics show in the Takapuna house above. Even the furniture might come from the hand of the architect as he was involved in furniture-crafting too.
All Chapman-Taylor's houses are economical in their use of space, intimate in detailing, and humanly satisfying to live in.
The home above, designed and built in the 1920s in Takapuna, North-shore, Auckland, was originally for jeweller Ruben Watts. Later it became owned by the Golders who have kept it intact all these years. Now, in 2016, after ninety years, it has been valued by the two owners, retaining its character including appropriate furnishings as you can see in my photos.
