......A striking humanity shows in the lively and bright living spaces -- sunny chat corners, women preparing pasta in the street for friendly contact, identity, spontaneity yet togetherness.

Effect in light is a vital element of timeless architecture independent of surface cosmetics. Without quality of light there's no perception, no space, no place.

Plain walls and whiteness provide a background to life here, and simplicity and purity of the environment heighten our responses. We find many examples of those architectural notions of serial vision, enclaves, outdoor rooms, context, and so on. This humped urban structure is unmatched.

Though the limewash may remind us that this area was once part of Magna Grecia, the dense urban quality of these white towns of southern Italy is different from the village scale of the Greek islands.
