Paro town sits by the bank of the Paro Chhu (river). The main street, not very historic, is lined with painted wooden shop-fronts with traditional Bhutanese character.
Dzongs keypoints in the culture, are architecturally striking in siting, design, and construction. They dominate the towns as forms of both religious and secular authority. Town-hall and cathedral in one. They were once of defence importance too. The Ta-Dzong, typically cylindrical and high-set, acted as lookout tower.
Paro Dzong High-noted Bhutanese architecture. The buttressed walls and floating roofs that tower over the town are visible through most of the valley. Paro Dzong was formerly the National Assembly, and now houses both monastic and district-government functions. Also known as Rinpung Dzong. Built on a hillside as in my photos.
Paro's Ta-Dzong serves as an excellent museum today.
