Up until the 16th C, before the time of King Sengge Namgyal and the rise of Leh, Basgo was a seat of power, first as capital of Lower Ladakh when the region was divided, later of unified Ladakh along with Shey. The fort-and-Palace is now in ruins but 300 years ago it was an almost impregnable perched bastion. Broken earth walls remain of a once great capital. But three temples that the king built, forming a monastery, are now restored with UNESCO and WMFund support to the Basgo locals.
