A ferry travels between Madalena on Pico Island and Horta on Faial Island. I loved the large, boat-shaped cloud above it, moving in the same direction.

This elongated sea stack along with the nearby Ilhéu em Pé, make up a geosite called the Islets of Madalena.. Located about 900m offshore of the island of Pico, the small islands are the remains of a tuff cone built by a submarine basaltic eruption. The volcanic rock visible above the water shows the coloration and bedding that are typical of a submarine basaltic eruption, or as geologist call them, a Surtseyan eruption. Named for the Island of Surtsey off the southern coast of Iceland, this type of volcanic eruption takes place in shallow seas or lakes. The photo was taken from the ferry between Faial and Pico which passes near these two islets.

After a day of heavy cloud cover, the peak of Pico Volcano finally started to emerge at sunset. This shield volcano, which towers 2,351 meters (7,713 feet) above sea level, offers one of the most iconic views in the Azores. As the highest point in Portugal and more than twice the height of any other volcano in the Azores, it’s a breathtaking sight. By this time, I had already taken the ferry back from Pico to the island of Faial. This view, from my hotel in Horta, looks toward the northwest end of Pico Island across the Marina of Horta in Porto Pim Bay. A popular stopover for yachts traveling the North Atlantic, the Caribbean, and the Mediterranean, Horta is the fourth most visited ocean marina in the world.

Juniperus brevifolia, a juniper species endemic to the Azores, grows near Lagoa do Capitão on the island of Pico. This juniper is endangered due to habitat loss throughout the archipelago. At Lagoa do Capitão, the tree's twisted, branching form adds a magical atmosphere to area around the lake. The small, shallow lake fills a sag along a northwest-southeast trending fault in the São Roque-Piedade Volcanic Complex on Pico's eastern end.
