Locomotive History
D2587 is one of a class of sixty nine 0-6-0 diesel mechanical shunters built by the Hunslet Engine Company between 1955 and 1961 and numbered from D2550 – D2619. Built in 1959 it was initially allocated to Wakefield MPD and by 1965 it had migrated to West Hartlepool MPD and by 1967 to Aberdean Ferryhill MPD. The steady reduction during the 1960’s in the demand for small shunting locomotives meant that there was a surplus and the class 05 locomotives did not find favour with British Railways in comparison to the class 04 and 03 locomotives. Class 05 withdrawals commenced as early as October 1966 and with one exception (on the Isle of White) were complete as early as June 1968 (before the end of steam). D2587 was withdrawn from Thornton Junction MPD in July 1967 and after being rebuilt by Hunslet was sold to Chadderton Power Station in Manchester where it worked for many years until sold for preservation to the Heritage Shunter Trust and was initially preserved at the East Lancashire Railway. It then moved to the South Yorkshire Railway at Meadowhall and later spent a number of years on the Lavender Line until 2004 when it arrived at Peak Rail before moving to Barrow Hill in November 2011.
