Standing at the head of a train in platform 3 at Manchester Piccadilly in the early afternoon of the 3rd July 1976 is Class 100 Driving Motor Brake Second (DMBS) M50351.

Unit History
Forty power/trailer two car sets were built by the Gloucester Railway Carriage and Wagon Co to this design in two batches making them rather rare. Twenty nine sets were for the Scottish Region (allocated to Leith Central) and eleven sets for the London Midland Region (allocated to Longsight) although the first nine Scottish Region sets were initially loaned to the London Midland Region. The Scottish sets were displaced at the end of the 1960’s with the majority being transferred to Norwich, however withdrawals commenced in 1972 and continued at regular intervals throughout the 1970’s. The survivors in the latter years could found in the Manchester area as Norwich dispensed with the class by withdrawal or transfer as fast as it could. M50351 was original partnered by M56106 and entered service in September 1957. It was withdrawn in July 1983 and broken up in December 1984.
