The most successful batch of Type 1 locos ordered under the Modernisation Plan were the English Electric series, classified Class 20. The initial order of 1956 was for twenty locomotives; however, the design was an immediate success and, before all twenty were in traffic, an order was made for an additional thirty locomotives for delivery to the Eastern and Scottish Regions. 20025 was one of this batch of thirty locomotives entering service as D8025 in November 1959. It was built by English Electric at the Robert Stephenson and Hawthorn works, Darlington and initially allocated to Hornsey MPD. Subsequent orders saw production run to two hundred and twenty eight locomotives. 20025 is seen here ex works, on display at the Derby Works open day, 4th September 1976. It would survive in traffic for another fifteen years until withdrawn in September 1991 and broken up by MC Metals at Glasgow in February 1995.
