Unit History
M50340 is a class 100 Driving Motor Brake Second built by the Gloucester Railway Carriage and Wagon Co and was originally paired with Driving Trailer Composite Lavatory Sc56095. Although intended for the Scottish Region it entered traffic in May 1957 initially allocated to Longsight MPD (on loan) for south Manchester suburban duties before moving to Leith Central for Edinburgh District local services. Only forty twin power/trailer sets were built to this design making them rather rare. By 1965 twenty nine of the forty sets were working from Scottish depots, with M50340 allocated to Hamilton, with the remaining eleven sets working in the Manchester area. The Scottish sets were displaced at the end of the 1960’s with the majority being transferred to Norwich, however M50340 was one of three sets retained at Hamilton until the mid 1970’s with M50340 transferring to Tyseley in May 1975. Withdrawals commenced in 1972 and continued at regular intervals throughout the 1970’s. The survivors in the latter years could found in the Manchester and Birmingham areas as Norwich dispensed with the class by withdrawal or transfer as fast as it could. In 1977 M50340 was withdrawn February 1981 and broken up in July 1984.
