08633 is Crewe station pilot and has just propelled a short train of Mark I coaches into one of the bay platforms at the south end of the station on a wet and miserable day, 15th January 1977.

Locomotive History
08633 is a Derby built locomotive and dates from 1959. Originally allocated to Stoke MPD this was followed by spells at Crewe and Doncaster. For the last few years it has been the depot shunter at Worksop Wagon Repair Depot until it closed on the 21st December 2009 and 08633 was removed to Toton by road on the 23rd December 2009 being stored the following day. In February 2010 it was fitted with remote control equipment enabling it to be driven remotely from the ground and it left Toton ten days later on the 17th March 2010 for Hinksey Yard. In August 2010 it moved to Bescot taking over the pilot duty from 08886. By December 2010 08633 was due an E exam and on the 16th December it arrived back at Toton and has been placed in store. 08633 was released back into traffic on the 9th February 2011 and left Toton on the 10th February 2011 for to Hoo Junction. After a year at Hoo Junction it was stored and moved north to Crewe for a C Exam in March 2012 following which it moved to Westbury in April 2012 and was reinstated, however by June 2012 it was back in store after failing.

In 1977 there was still a small shed at Burton on Trent complete with fuelling facilities and on the 29th January it was playing host to a pair of Class 20’s, 20153 partnered by 20183 plus 47329, 08046 and 08623. By this point in time the depot at Burton was being used almost exclusively for fuel only with the locomotives being stabled at Mantle Lane, Coalville in the heart of the Leicestershire coalfield. A visit on the 9th May 1971 had on shed four class 08's, twenty two class 20's a class 25 and a class 47.

Locomotive History
20153 was delivered new to Toton in 1966 it is still eleven years later carrying its original green livery. Withdrawn in November 1987 it was broken up by Vic Berry, Leicester in March 1988.

24015 has little time left when seen here at Doncaster works on the 16th January 1977 as it been broken up by the end of the month.

Locomotive History
Delivered as D5015 from Derby works during May 1959, allocated to Crewe South MPD before transferring in September 1959 to Camden. The winter timetable commencing 2nd November 1959 found D5015/16/18/19 taking over some of the local workings out of Euston. With the suburban services out of Euston planned for electrification, the invasion of DMU's did not occur here, leaving the local commuters (for better or worse) in the hands of the LMS Twins (10000/01), the Bullied Trio (10101/02/03) and endless class 24 and class 40's until 1966. D5015 migrated to Bescot in December 1965 and joined in the mass movement of the London Midland Region class 24’s to the Stoke Division when it was transferred there during June 1967. In October 1971 the Scottish Region Polmadie depot became home for 5015, being used to retire the few remaining NBL type 2’s and Clayton type 1 locomotives from service, migrating to Eastfield in March 1972. I saw this engine on Polmadie on the 23rd April 1972 along with fifty other locomotives including four withdrawn NBL type 2’s (6101/23/24/37) and nine Clayton type 1’s (8507/08/28/29/32/36/52/68/74) that it had been sent north to replace. Active service ended during July 1975, when along with a number of Scottish Region class 24's 24015 was put to store (at Cadder Yard), withdrawal coming in August 1975. It eventually moved to Glasgow works for spares removal, however it would be left for Doncaster works to finally break up the locomotive and 24015/16/71 and 24117 were towed to Doncaster during the first week of May 1976.

25063 backs down on to its train of Mark I coaches in one of the bay platforms at the south end of the Crewe station on a wet and miserable day, 15th January 1977. It’s fortunate that 25063 is one of the boiler fitted class 25’s otherwise it would have been a cold journey to South Wales.

Locomotive History
25063 was built at Derby works in 1963 as D5213 and although boiler fitted it remained vacuum braked and therefore was an early target when class 25/1 withdrawals began in earnest in 1978. It succumbed in November 1980 although would linger for over two years until the cutters torch at Swindon final disposed of 25063 in March 1983.
