Its early morning and 09001 stands between duties in one of the short bay non passenger platforms at Waterloo in the days when there was sufficient loco hauled passenger trains and parcel/newspaper traffic to warrant a station pilot, 20th April 1976.

Locomotive History
09001 was built at Darlington works in 1959 as D3665 and though very similar to a class 08 shunting locomotive, the class 09 locomotives are re-geared to give a maximum top speed of 27.5 mph (44 km/h) at the expense of a lower tractive effort for Southern Region duties. Around 1971 it was fitted with dual brakes with waist level air brake fittings for coupling to Southern Region EMU stock. It would remain a Southern Region engine for most of its career until transferring to South Wales towards the end of its career in May 2004. 09001 was transported north from South Wales on the 7th February 2009 to Doncaster and after arrival in South Yorkshire, it was subsequently stored. It was made available for sale on the 2nd September 2010 and was purchased by the Heritage Shunters Trust, based at Peak moving to Rowsley on the 28th January 2011.

Clapham Junction yard pilot on the 5th April 1980 is 09001.

Locomotive History
09001 was built at Darlington works in 1959 as D3665 and though very similar to a class 08 shunting locomotive, the class 09 locomotives are re-geared to give a maximum top speed of 27.5 mph (44 km/h) at the expense of a lower tractive effort. The higher top speed was particularly useful for Southern Region duties and D3665 was allocated to Eastleigh MPD on release from Darlington works. In September 1962 it transferred to Hither Green where it remained apart from an eighteen month spell at Ashford from January 1966 until transferred to Selhurst in January 1974. In March 1971 it was fitted with dual brakes with waist level air brake fittings for coupling to Southern Region EMU stock. It would remain a Southern Region engine until transferring to South Wales towards the end of its career in May 2004. 09001 was transported north from South Wales on the 7th February 2009 to Doncaster and after arrival in South Yorkshire, it was subsequently stored. Waterloo station pilot sometime in 1974 is 09005. Although it received corporate rail blue in November 1970 its previous 1956 “Ferret and Dartboard” emblem is starting to show through the fading blue paintwork.

Locomotive History
09005 was built at Darlington works in 1959 as D3669 and though very similar to a class 08 shunting locomotive, the class 09 locomotives are geared to give a maximum top speed of 27.5 mph (44 km/h) at the expense of a lower tractive effort. The higher top speed was particularly useful for Southern Region duties and D3669 was allocated to Norwood Junction MPD on release from Darlington works in February 1959. In July 1965 it transferred to Brighton where it remained until transferred to Selhurst in July 1971. In November 1970 it was fitted with dual brakes with waist level air brake fittings for coupling to Southern Region EMU stock. It would remain at Selhurst until 1991 when it was transferred to Knottingley. It returned South in 2004 with spells at Hither Green Tilbury and Hoo Junction before being stored in 2009 and moved to Toton. It was broken up during February 2011 by CF Booth, Rotherham.

09009 basks in some winter sunshine between duties in one of the short bay non passenger platforms at Waterloo in the days when there was sufficient loco hauled passenger trains and parcel/newspaper traffic to warrant a station pilot, 21st March 1976.

Locomotive History
09009 was built at Darlington works in 1959 as D3720 and though very similar to a class 08 shunting locomotive, the class 09 locomotives are re-geared to give a maximum top speed of 27.5 mph (44 km/h) at the expense of a lower tractive effort for Southern Region duties. It was originally allocated to Hither Green but quickly transferred to Norwood Junction (Selhurst) in 1960. Around 1971 it was fitted with dual brakes with waist level air brake fittings for coupling to Southern Region EMU stock. It would remain a Selhurst engine for most of its career until transferring to Old Oak Common in the late 1990’s. By early 2004 it was out of use at Stewarts Lane and stored on the 29th March 2004. However following repairs, it was reinstated back to traffic on the 15th April 2004, but this was short lived and on the 27th May 2004 it was again stored at Stewarts Lane. In late February 2009, 09009 was prepared for removal and on the 10th March 2009 left South London by road for Toton where it arrived later in the day. In January 2011 it was moved to CF Booth, Rotherham however it was not broken up but sold to LH Group Services who in February 2011 moved it to Barton under Needlewood for overhaul. On completion and following a short spell on the Great Central Railway (North) for “running in” it moved to Barton Dock, Trafford Park in October 2011 and entered service as one of the yard pilots.
