09014 is the carriage sidings pilot at Clapham Junction and is busy shunting coaching stock, 20th April 1976. 09014 was built at Horwich works as D4102 in 1961 and though very similar to a class 08 shunting locomotive, the class 09 locomotives are re-geared to give a maximum top speed of 27.5 mph (44 km/h) at the expense of a lower tractive effort for Southern Region duties. It would remain a Southern Region engine until the early 1990’s when it moved north to Knottingley. In May 2009 it was stored at Doncaster MPD having arrived there from Millerhill after a spell as the yard pilot at Washwood Heath. In early January 2011 it was sold to HNRC moved to the Boden Rail Engineering works at Washwood Heath for repairs.

09012 pauses in between shunts at Clapham Junction sometime in 1974/early 1975 . Originally D4100 it was built at Horwich works, entering traffic in September 1961 and though very similar to a class 08 shunting locomotive, the class 09 are re-geared to give a maximum top speed of 27.5 mph (44 km/h) at the expense of a lower tractive effort. The class originally operated on the Southern Region, and 09012 is fitted with waist level air brake fittings for coupling to Southern Region EMU stock. Initially allocated to Ashford MPD it transferred to the London area around the end of 1966 being allocated to Feltham, and then Selhurst when Feltham closed in July 1967. Its final allocation was Hither Green where it was stored out of use in February 2004. In July 2010 it was sold to HNRC and transported to Barrow Hill where it has been repaired and was back in use in November 2010. It can currently (March 2018) be found on the Severn Valley Railway.

Re-scanned and re-edited from original negative 21st March 2018.

Clapham Junction yard pilot on the 5th April 1980 is 09001.

Locomotive History
09001 was built at Darlington works in 1959 as D3665 and though very similar to a class 08 shunting locomotive, the class 09 locomotives are re-geared to give a maximum top speed of 27.5 mph (44 km/h) at the expense of a lower tractive effort. The higher top speed was particularly useful for Southern Region duties and D3665 was allocated to Eastleigh MPD on release from Darlington works. In September 1962 it transferred to Hither Green where it remained apart from an eighteen month spell at Ashford from January 1966 until transferred to Selhurst in January 1974. In March 1971 it was fitted with dual brakes with waist level air brake fittings for coupling to Southern Region EMU stock. It would remain a Southern Region engine until transferring to South Wales towards the end of its career in May 2004. 09001 was transported north from South Wales on the 7th February 2009 to Doncaster and after arrival in South Yorkshire, it was subsequently stored. It was made available for sale on the 2nd September 2010 and was purchased by the Heritage Shunters Trust, based at Peak moving to Rowsley on the 28th January 2011.

Its early morning and 09001 stands between duties in one of the short bay non passenger platforms at Waterloo in the days when there was sufficient loco hauled passenger trains and parcel/newspaper traffic to warrant a station pilot, 20th April 1976.

Locomotive History
09001 was built at Darlington works in 1959 as D3665 and though very similar to a class 08 shunting locomotive, the class 09 locomotives are re-geared to give a maximum top speed of 27.5 mph (44 km/h) at the expense of a lower tractive effort for Southern Region duties. Around 1971 it was fitted with dual brakes with waist level air brake fittings for coupling to Southern Region EMU stock. It would remain a Southern Region engine for most of its career until transferring to South Wales towards the end of its career in May 2004. 09001 was transported north from South Wales on the 7th February 2009 to Doncaster and after arrival in South Yorkshire, it was subsequently stored. It was made available for sale on the 2nd September 2010 and was purchased by the Heritage Shunters Trust, based at Peak moving to Rowsley on the 28th January 2011.

Waterloo station pilot sometime in 1974 is 09005. Although it received corporate rail blue in November 1970 its previous 1956 “Ferret and Dartboard” emblem is starting to show through the fading blue paintwork.

Locomotive History
09005 was built at Darlington works in 1959 as D3669 and though very similar to a class 08 shunting locomotive, the class 09 locomotives are geared to give a maximum top speed of 27.5 mph (44 km/h) at the expense of a lower tractive effort. The higher top speed was particularly useful for Southern Region duties and D3669 was allocated to Norwood Junction MPD on release from Darlington works in February 1959. In July 1965 it transferred to Brighton where it remained until transferred to Selhurst in July 1971. In November 1970 it was fitted with dual brakes with waist level air brake fittings for coupling to Southern Region EMU stock. It would remain at Selhurst until 1991 when it was transferred to Knottingley. It returned South in 2004 with spells at Hither Green Tilbury and Hoo Junction before being stored in 2009 and moved to Toton. It was broken up during February 2011 by CF Booth, Rotherham.
